DO NOT RECYCLE !
The problem we want to face :
Today, in our society, there is a real issue regarding glass recycling.
Even if 7 out of 10 glass bottles are recycled each year in France we can notice an increase of glass waste across the streets mixed with household wastes.
This is a real problem because on the one hand the glass recycling system in France is a complex process with technical steps consuming a lot of energy and money. You have to collect, to sort, to burn, to melt…So complicated and so expensive! On the other hand glass decontamination has its cost. The time glass decays in the nature is very long, around 4 000 years!
Therefore, this creates a social and environmental issue.
Why does this problem exist?
We can explain this non-ecological behaviour by the lack of glass trash in streets and by the fact that people are not enough aware of this issue.
Yet, there is a deeper reason that could explain this: We are a generation with more and more disposable products. We use and we dispose all the time even regarding glass. We believed what was disposable was good, it was the cornerstone of the consumer society. We need to change this way of thinking. A non-polluting trash is a non-produced trash. Imagine the amount of energy and money for just a small glass bottle that served once. It’s too bad!
What do we want to do?
As we saw the recycling system of glass is widely developed in our country so we have to focus on one subject: how to decrease glass bottles recycling? Let’s be more provocative: How to prevent people from recycling their glass bottles!
To be more specific: The challenge is to divide by 10 the quantity of glass bottles recycled. In 2012 France recycled 2 million tonnes glass, the goal is to reach 200000 tonnes.
The solution could be a new matrix, a structure such as the old forgotten concept of the deposit system that could be improved. It could also be a new product, a new kind of bottle you don’t want to throw away!
We are committed to reduce glass recycling because we believe in:
- Reducing glass waste
- Saving Money and energy and reducing the cost of recycling
- A whole new conception of consumption.
