How to change people's mentality into a sustainable one

1. What Problem do you want to solve ?

Although occupying only 2% of the Earth’s land surface, cities account for more than 60% of global energy consumption and 75% of carbon emissions. Over 3.5bn people are city dwellers today, and by 2050 that number is projected to almost double. The averagely amount of waste per French person is 375kg/year.With figures like these, it’s not a stretch to say that our battle for a sustainable future will be won or lost in our cities. What emerged from our discussion is that there are two big barriers to transforming our cities. Firstly, city governments are generally not structured in a way that enables joined-up decision making, so it’s hard for companies to sell city-wide solutions. Secondly, there is often not enough hard evidence concerning the cost/benefit of particular solutions, so it’s hard for city governments to build a compelling business case for investing in them.

2. Why does this problem exist?

Sustainability needs cities as much as cities needs sustainability We are not suggesting that the sustainability of cities or cities positive influence on sustainability will be easy or certain. What we are suggesting is the potential of a mutual beneficial relationship and that cities must become an even bigger focal point for sustainable development to take advantage from it. The purpose of cities states is to seek the dialogue and the central question of which is: how might business and others come together to strengthen and leverage the unique characteristics and advantage of cities to accelerate progress in sustainability?

3. What breakthrough are you commited to creating?

Not only the Government and the firms are important members to develop sustainability in cities, the city dwellers have a major role in it. Our aim is to help the cities to be more effective about sustainability and to prevent more the citizens about it so they can feel involved in this issue. What is at stake is to encourage the people to evolve at the same pace of their environment.
