First description of our project's idea
The ocean hoover

1. What Problem do you want to solve ?

A great amount of waste and pollutants is rejected every year in the oceans. Once put in the marine environment, a lot of those pollutants, whether they come from the earth or the oceans themselves, are accumulated in the trophic chain et threaten greatly the ecosystems, coastal as well as high sea's.

Even if the pollution of the oceans' issue is nowadays known by everyone, and discuss by many, there is not a real project for resolving it. It is time to think of an efficient solution and propose alternatives to this problem.

This is a big problem to solve, and we do not pretend to have one solution for all the pollutions (because there are a lot of kinds of pollution) existing in the oceans, but we need to believe that we can at least find a solution to improve the current situation.

2. Why does this problem exist?

Human activity is the main and probably the only reason of why the pollution in the oceans exists. And the stakes are much bigger than we think : there are many many consequences to this kind of pollution that we don't even think about.

First, fertilizers and pesticides used by the farming exploitations are either rejected directly in the oceans, or get there by condensation and find themselves in the clouds (so when it rains, it goes back to the oceans).

Industrial and nuclear waste, exhaust gas from streets and any kind of cars are spread in watercourses and rivers. Polluting discharges going in the atmosphere due to industries or transports are another important source coming from the earth. Once they are emitted, lots of chemical components stay in the air for weeks, and go back to the oceans because of the wind.

Marine activities such as mining exploitations, transport, fishing and cruise boats reject a great amount of toxic components in the ocean (even if it doesn't represent a lot compared to the other kinds of pollution).

Noise pollution also disturb some animal species behavior like marine mammals. Oil pollution resulting from shipwrecks is since a long time a major international issue.

The lack of sustainable consciousness and concern is also an issue that doesn't help things to get better.

3. What breakthrough are you committed to creating?

We would like to think of a different and innovative solution to this problem, a solution which aim is not necessarily moralizing people about it. We think that this kind of solution have been tried too many times and it didn't really had good repercussions.

We don't already have a precise idea of what we could imagine to fix the ocean's pollution but we believe that solutions can be found, whether they try to improve the situation upstream or downstream.

We expect a lot from deeper readings and also from biological studies about the marine environment. Effectively, studies showed that some kind of algae, if we produce it massively, can both solve part of the issue due to the reject of wastewater in the ocean, greenhouse effect and can also allow aquaculture to reintroduce some species that are disappearing nowadays.

Admittedly, this is just part of the issue, but we can use that kind of studies to be the basis of our research for a way to depollute oceans.
