Video from group n°124
Welcome to the webpage of group 124
The topic we have decided to explore is the following :
Non potable et toxique, l'eau peut mener à des problèmes de santé et financiers dans certains pays. Ce projet consiste à rendre accessible le mécanisme d'assainissement pour ces populations qui n'ont pas les moyens de se l'offrir à l'aide de nouvelles méthodes et de nouveaux matériaux peu chers et efficaces.
When water became a murderer
According to studies made by the NGO “Solidarité Internationale”, 2.5 million of people died due to a lack of drinking water. Furthermore, more than the half of the global population drinks water considered “dangerous for the health”. Indeed, some diseases flourish with the lack of water or with a water that didn’t meet human consumption standards. Some examples are cholera, hepatitis or more typhoid fever. The victims are mainly under 15 year old children. The NGO also acknowledge that one billion of people didn’t use proper toilets and two billions drank water with fecal matter which put in danger the population. But health problem are not the only issue, the lack of infrastructure have effects on education. In fact, children (and especially girls) are forced to look for water several miles away from their home.
Our video showed some kind of methods to decontaminate water such as filtration with sand. However, it exists more methods to achieve this goal:
-chlorination of water,
-sterilization with radius,
-filtration with tissue,
-lifestraw method or filtering straw.
These methods require more or less money to be implemented. Those that allows to properly clean the water are the most expensive one so some countries can’t afford them. Drinking water for everyone is one of the major issue of the century. Even if we can see an increase in the percentage of the global population access to drinking water, it isn’t enough compare to the numerous death caused by polluted water. Moreover, even if water will become a scarce resource, developed countries do not matter to pay a high price. One relevant example is the cost of desalination in Saudi Arabia or in California, United States. Furthermore, youthfulness isn’t the only victim of the drinking water issue. Water is always at stake with the sustainable development because it is linked to the environmental change but also agriculture, energy or health. When fighting against poverty, backing up economic development or preserving the ecosystem, everything is linked to water. The way to manage water crystallize tensions and conflicts all around the world. That is why it is a crucial issue. In a nutshell, drinking water is the first step to help a country developing itself by increasing education, decreasing tensions and developing sustainable way of producing. I will end this report with one question: if we don’t make anything now, how the populations will afford to develop decontamination system in a world where sustainable performance is more and more important?
